5 Things to LOVE About Oregon.

1. It’s unbelievably beautiful here during the summer!

2. The people are oh so nice.

3. There are more classic BMWs here than anywhere else. Case in point, I was driving down I-5 on Tuesday and came upon a stunning 2002 tii being driven by the sweetest old woman and when she saw Katie she freaked out and we spend like 30 seconds laughing and waving to each other.

4. Did I mention how nice people are?

5. Portland is a very classy city and Seattle is only 2 and a half hours away (and it turns out that it’s a great city, also filled with nice people).

BMW 320i (Katie)

So I am the happy (generally) owner of a 1983 BMW 320i (e21). Here are a few tidbits of advice for purchasing and owning old Beemers:

Purchasing

If you don’t really know what to look for use an inspection checklist, like this one from BMP Design. Alternatively, use a website like this one from TJ Rubley. TJ/DC featured my car (back in the day), his blog is a great source for interesting German cars and I think more helpful than bringatrailer.com. I recommend finding a car that is mechanically sound, rather than one that has a great interior or paint job. Nothing is worse than being stranded by your car!

Owning

Start with the basics. Get an oil change and a valve adjustment. This will probably run you around $175 for both and will help you establish some sense of what the engine needs. Next, get the coolant system pressure tested; this will immediately clue you in to what the car will do in warm weather. An even better alternative would be an overall service review. Depending on where you take your car this will run you between $65 and $150 dollars, but will outline the condition of all the car’s key systems. I’ve had work done by The Sports Car Shop and they have been very helpful.

Next, join the BMW CCA. They have an excellent club magazine ~ Roundel, a huge membership and tons of regional events. Best of all, they provide crazy member benefits like technical/mechanical support, new BMW purchasing discounts, dealership and service support (if you’re having trouble with, for instance, your mechanic), and nationwide classifieds. If you live in the Pacific Northwest I would suggest joining the BMW ACA, a Portland based BMW club (which is large enough to have it’s upcoming events listed in the BMW CCA’s regional publications).

The Big Update…

Alright, so it’s been a while, here’s what’s new:

1. Leaving for S.Korea on or by July 15 (90% sure)

2. Decided to buy a Canon Rebel XSi (cause I’ll come back get a 5D mk2)

3. Tattoo will have to wait (swallow sadness)

4. Decided to buy a ranch in Jackson Hole and spend the rest of my life wrangling and skiing

5. Nick is offically off the hook

6. Katie isn’t for sale, don’t try me

7. Sophie is officially off the hook, buy her album

8. There are amazing people everywhere and that gets reaffirmed everyday of my life

9. I can’t wait to see my grandparents (they’ve been off the hook for long enough to forget that they were ever on it)

10. Swimming has been preoccupying my life for the last 4 or 5 days and I seriously need to get my trunks and go for it

So I was just reading this article about Kanye West and I realized that most of what you find in the Times is junk. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Times, the main articles are great and it’s still my homepage. I think it’s the blogs that drive me crazy. I don’t really care about Maynards Prius Diary or that Giorgio Armani had a good meal on his trip to the U.S. I obviously blog and so I might not be a credible source, but honestly, what is the deal with boring blogs clogging up my news? I think I should probably stick with what I know: seriouswheels.
